A Mediterranean cruise packs centuries of history, coastline and cuisine into a single trip. The key decisions: which region, which season, and which ship.
West or East?
The Western Mediterranean (Spain, France, Italy, Malta) is for lovers of cosmopolitan cities: Barcelona, Rome and Monte Carlo deliver art, fashion and architecture. The Eastern Mediterranean (Croatia, Montenegro, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus) means sun-soaked coastlines and ancient civilizations: whitewashed towns, archaeological sites and clear blue waters.
When to sail
The season runs May through October. My favorite months are the shoulders — May, June, September, October — with lighter crowds and comfortable temperatures.
How long
Plan at least seven days; with fourteen or more you can explore both regions with real depth.
What to pack
Breathable daytime layers, comfortable shoes for cobbled streets and uneven steps, and serious sun protection.
Choosing your cruise line
Year-round value? MSC. Families? Disney Cruise Line. Premium comfort? Celebrity. Intimate luxury? Azamara or Explora Journeys. Every line sails a different Mediterranean — tell me your style and I'll match you to the right ship, itinerary and cabin.
