A volcanic crescent with whitewashed villages hanging over a flooded caldera. Santorini earns its fame at golden hour, but the island rewards those who stay longer: black-sand beaches, Assyrtiko wineries and a Bronze Age city buried in ash.
Things to do in Santorini
- Watch the sunset from Oia — arrive early or book a terrace table.
- Walk the caldera path from Fira to Oia (about 3 hours, go at sunrise).
- Taste Assyrtiko at a family winery in Pyrgos or Megalochori.
- Visit the excavations at Akrotiri, the 'Greek Pompeii'.
- Swim at Red Beach or take a catamaran around the volcano.
When to go
May, June, September and October: warm sea, long days and far fewer cruise crowds than July–August.
